About one third of the land we plan to acquire will be planted with dwarf fruit trees and berry bushes of various types. This orchard will be tended by our volunteers, with members of the community being welcomes to come and harvest a certain amount of fresh fruit and berries when they ripen. Excess produce from this area of the facility will be treated the same way we treat abandoned garden plots, with about half being sold at the farmers' market and the rest donated to the local food bank. We estimate that this area will contain over 100 dwarf fruit trees and nearly 300 berry bushes, which will include apples, apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, blackberries, blueberries, currants, elderberries, gooseberries, honeyberries, huckleberries, mulberries, raspberries, seaberries, and strawberries. |
